What is monotasking?

Is monotasking a word? Yes. It's an accepted term, essentially interchangeable with single-tasking, and it's used as the direct opposite of multitasking.
In practice, monotasking looks less dramatic than it sounds. It's writing the report without also having your inbox open. It's taking the call without scrolling. It's the small decision, made before you start, to let one thing hold your attention until it's actually finished, rather than treating "finished" as whatever state the task is in when you last glanced at it.

One task wins because the brain can't give equal high-level attention to two demanding tasks at the same time. What feels like multitasking is actually rapid switching between tasks, and each switch has a cost.

Doesn't multitasking feel more productive?
Yes, and that feeling is real, it just isn't measuring the thing you think it's measuring. Switching between an email, a chat notification, and a half-written document is stimulating. Novelty and small bursts of urgency register as momentum even while your actual output slows down. The feeling and the output are answering two different questions.

The working memory point deserves a beat of its own. - Block distractions. Put your phone out of reach, not just on silent. Proximity alone pulls attention, even when the screen stays dark.
- Manage your time deliberately. Decide what you're doing next before you finish the current task, instead of letting whatever pings you decide for you.
- Manage your stress. A stressed brain reaches for the dopamine hit of checking something new. Lower baseline stress makes staying on one task easier, not just more virtuous.
- Batch your shallow tasks separately. Email, quick replies, and small chores are real work, but mixing them into a focused task multiplies your switching cost.
